An imposing and spectacular rocky landscape, it is deeply marked with the scars left by the glaciers of erstwhile. Because of its altitude, the geographic isolation allowed certain species of animals and plants to find refuge or to evolve here separately from other populations, thus creating distinct and specific species for this <span class=\"\">territory.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In the higher altitudes, you can find and watch with ease, the&nbsp;<em>ex-libris<\/em> of the reptiles, the <strong>Iberian Rock Lizard<\/strong> (<em>Iberolacerta monticola<\/em>), exclusive from Estrela <span class=\"\">Mountain.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">It is also possible to see some insects that are exclusive from here. The&nbsp;<strong><em>Monotropus lusitanica<\/em><\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong><em>Iberodorcadion brannani<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<strong><em>Zabrus estrellanus<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong><em>Ctenodecticus lusitanicus<\/em><\/strong> are the main ones. Other species have in Estrela Mountain Natural Park its exclusive distribution area in Portugal. Such is the case of the dragonflies <strong>Moorland Hawker<\/strong> (<em>Aeshna juncea<\/em>) and <strong>Yellow-winged Darter<\/strong> (<em>Sympetrum flaveolum<\/em>), as the <strong>Black Satyr<\/strong> (<em>Satyrus actaea<\/em>)&nbsp;<span class=\"\">butterfly.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\" style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">From the group&nbsp;<span class=\"\">of existing<\/span>&nbsp;birds and that&nbsp;<span class=\"\">we can observe at<\/span>&nbsp;Estrela Mountain Natural Park, some of them find in this mountain its preferred&nbsp;<span class=\"\">habitat<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"\">at national level.<\/span> Of a list of about 100 species of residents birds, we can highlight <span class=\"\">the following<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Rock Thrush<\/strong> (<em>Monticola saxatilis<\/em>), <strong>Ortolan Bunting<\/strong> (<em>Emberiza hortulana)<\/em>, <strong>Rock Bunting<\/strong> (<em>Emberiza cia<\/em>),&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Northern Wheatear<\/strong> (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Oenanthe oenanthe<\/em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">), <strong>Tawny Pipit<\/strong> (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Anthus campestris<\/em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">),&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Crag Martin<\/strong> (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Ptyonoprogne rupestris<\/em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">), <strong>Dipper<\/strong> (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Cinclus cinclus<\/em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">), <strong>Common Redstart<\/strong> (<\/span><em style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Phoenicuros phoenicuros<\/em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">). The most common are the Juniper (<em>Juniperus alpina<\/em>) and grasses such as<em>&nbsp;Festuca henriquesii<\/em>&nbsp;and Cervum (<em>Nardus&nbsp;stricta<\/em>), well adapted to the adverse weather of winter with snow cover.&nbsp;<em>Campanulla herminii<\/em>, a beautiful blue flower associated with altitude pastures (<em>cervunais<\/em>), and&nbsp;<em>Silene foetida<\/em>&nbsp;subsp.&nbsp;<em>foetida<\/em>, bloom during the summer months. Afterwards, during the Tertiary period (65-2.5 million years ago) it continue to rise with the Alpine orogeny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Glacial processes during the Quaternary period (last 2.5 Ma) contributed to the current morphology of the upper levels of the mountain range. The Upper Plateau was covered by a polar ice cap measuring approximately 66 m\u00b2 and reaching an average thickness of 80 meters. Seven glacial tongues diverged from this ice cap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The last cold period (Wurm glaciation) began approximately 100,000 years ago and ended only 10,000 years ago. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">It was mainly the processes associated with glaciation that left deep marks on the relief and landscape of Estrela Mountain, making it the best place in the country to see this. Its geomorphological richness has also earned this territory the classification of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geoparkestrela.pt\/menu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geopark Estrela<\/a><\/strong> by UNESCO.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;7282&#8243;
