Its preserved historic buildings, the emblematic silhouette of its towering castle and its geographical position, has had an important historical significance, as evidenced by human occupation since over 2000 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Its ex-libris, also the oldest existing structure, is the castle and the surviving elements of the ancient town within its walls, based on a 4th century BC hill fort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In its surroundings, a mosaic landscape favours a great diversity of wild species, from insects to birds. Easily spotted are the <strong>Blue Rock Thrush<\/strong> (<em>Monticola solitarius<\/em>), the <strong>Hoopoe<\/strong> (<em>Upupa epops<\/em>), the <strong>Golden Oriole<\/strong> (<em>Oriolus oriolus<\/em>), the <strong>Bee-eater<\/strong> (<em>Merops apiaster<\/em>), the <strong>Iberian Magpie<\/strong> (<em>Cyanopica cooki<\/em>), the <strong>Turtle Dove<\/strong> (<em>Streptopelia turtur<\/em>), the <strong>Rock Sparrow<\/strong> (<em>Petronia petronia<\/em>), among many others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The existing mammals are almost all strictly nocturnal. The <strong>Genet<\/strong> (<em>Genetta genetta<\/em>), the <strong>Badger<\/strong> (<em>Meles meles<\/em>), the <strong>Wild Boar<\/strong> (<em>Sus scrofa<\/em>), the <strong>Polecat<\/strong> (<em>Mustela putorius<\/em>). However, the <strong>Red Fox<\/strong> (<em>Vulpes vulpes<\/em>) and the <strong>Mongoose<\/strong> (<em>Herpestes ichneumon<\/em>) can be seen in broad daylight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The group of reptiles includes some interesting species, whose distribution is restricted to south-western Europe, such as the <strong>Moorish Gecko<\/strong> (<em>Tarentola mauritanica<\/em>), the <strong>Spiny-footed Lizard<\/strong> (<em>Acanthodactylus erythrurus<\/em>), the <strong>Occelated Lizard<\/strong> (<em>Timon lepidus<\/em>), the <strong>Portugal Wall Lizard<\/strong> (<em>Podarcis lusitanicus<\/em>), the <strong>Large Psammodromus<\/strong> (<em>Psammodromus algirus<\/em>), the <strong>Horseshoe Whip Snake<\/strong> (<em>Hemorrhois hippocrepis<\/em>), the <strong>Ladder Snake<\/strong> (<em>Rhinechis scalaris<\/em>) and the <strong>Viperine Water Snake<\/strong> (<em>Natrix maura<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The amphibians include the <strong>Marbled Newt<\/strong> (<em>Triturus marmoratus<\/em>), the <strong>Bosca\u2019s Newt<\/strong> (<em>Lissotriton boscai<\/em>) and the <strong>Iberian Midwife Toad<\/strong> (<em>Alytes cysternasii<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The great diversity of flowers attracts a wide variety of butterflies.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;16782&#8243; img_size=&#8221;400&#215;265&#8243; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_3d&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;12523&#8243; img_size=&#8221;400&#215;265&#8243; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_3d&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;8012&#8243; img_size=&#8221;400&#215;265&#8243; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_3d&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Flora<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The dominant vegetation in Marialva is made up of <strong>Cork Oak<\/strong> (<em>Quercus suber<\/em>), <strong>Holm Oak<\/strong> (<em>Quercus rotundifolia<\/em>), <strong>Portuguese Oak<\/strong> (<em>Quercus faginea<\/em>) and <strong>Juniper<\/strong> (<em>Juniperus oxycedrus<\/em>). In the shrub layer, the <strong>Hawthorn<\/strong> (<em>Crataegus monogyna<\/em>) and the <strong>Yellow Broom<\/strong> (<em>Cytisus striatus<\/em>) predominate.
