{"id":9498,"date":"2018-07-31T14:22:39","date_gmt":"2018-07-31T14:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/k52mhucbgfd.preview.infomaniak.website\/?p=9498"},"modified":"2018-07-31T14:22:39","modified_gmt":"2018-07-31T14:22:39","slug":"zezere-glacier-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wildlifeportugal.pt\/en\/2018\/07\/31\/zezere-glacier-valley\/","title":{"rendered":"Z\u00eazere Glacier Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9464&#8243; img_size=&#8221;900&#215;598&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_3d&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;20px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h5><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\">Summer image of the Z\u00eazere Glacier Valley<\/span><\/span><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\">About 30,000 years ago, the appearance of this location was considerably different.<\/span> <span class=\"\">Provided by the strict Wurm climate, Estrela Mountain reached its glacier peak in the highest altitudes.<\/span> <span class=\"\">The mass of ice that carved and covered the Z\u00eazere Valley surpassed 300 meters thickness.<\/span> <span class=\"\">This one was fed by the icy cap of the Tower Plateau and by Candieira glacier.<\/span> <span class=\"\">In its greater extension, about 8km, it presents an SSW-NNE orientation and the &#8220;melting&#8221; point&nbsp; was near the place where the town of Manteigas is currently located.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Landscape interpretation<\/h5>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\">In the image we can see the characteristic U-shaped configuration of the valleys modelled by glaciers.<\/span> In the foreground, on both slopes, we see granite blocks <\/span><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\">accumulations, <\/span><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\">that were dragged and deposited by the glacier tongue. Although not very noticeable, one can see, at the bottom of the image, a little to the right, a small crest that develops along the half-slope. <span class=\"\">Located just upstream of the Candieira waterfall, it extends to the middle of the course of the river, causing in this place a diversion of the Z\u00eazere waters.<\/span> It is Espinha\u00e7o de C\u00e3o and it is indeed a glacier moraine. This deposit of granite blocks was formed by the interception of the Z\u00eazere and the Candieira glaciers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Estrela Mountain is a natural area of excellence for nature lovers<\/h5>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\">With almost 2000m above sea level, Estrela is the highest mountain of continental Portugal. Its imposing and spectacular rocky landscape is deeply marked with the scars left by the glaciers of erstwhile.
